Modeling with Sculpting Wax for Lost Wax Casting
Explore the magic of sculpting wax and polymer clay molds to create jewellery pieces through the lost wax casting method. With its soft and pliable nature, sculpting wax provides a forgiving alternative to the harder carving waxes often used for lost wax casting. In this 3-session class you will be introduced to the ways in which sculpting wax can be folded and formed into organic shapes, as well as its possibilities for being textured in various ways. Sea shells, buttons, coins, or textured templates are just a few options for objects that can be used to add texture to this playful and creative material!
Students will also learn to make a re-usable mold out of polymer clay. Polymer clay molds can be created through organic approaches, such as carving into the molds with carving tools and burrs, or using objects to make impressions into the molds.
During the first 2 classes, students will create one polymer clay mold, as well as multiple shapes out of sculpting wax. Wax shapes and molds will then be transformed into sterling silver jewellery pieces through the lost wax casting method, which will be done by Juvelisto staff before students return for their 3rd class, when they will learn the cleaning, polishing, and finishing techniques needed to complete their pieces.
Students will finish the class with:
- multiple sculpting wax models
- one polymer clay mold (re-usable)
- 2 sterling silver ready-to-wear jewellery pieces
The cost of the class includes modeling and mold making materials, as well as 30 grams of silver, which is the amount allocated to each student for their 2 final cast jewellery pieces*.
No experience is necessary for this class. Please wear close-toed shoes, comfortable clothes, your hair tied back and no scarves or lose clothing (such as long open sleeves that could pose a safety hazard).
Workshops will not run until sufficient enrollment has been met. We recommend students register at least 10 days before class start dates to avoid disappointment.
The more the merrier! Feel free to spread the word to friends and family as this helps ensure classes will fill to capacity.
*Students who wish to use more than 30 grams of silver can do so for a cost increase based on the specifications of their desired project.
